Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck’s “Kasteel Bruin or Donker”

I realize that I mostly review American Craft Beer on this site. Let it be known I enjoy all good beer from around the world! Over the past couple years I have had the pleasure of enjoying some excellent Belgian style ales. No matter how good they are, there is just no substitute for an authentic Belgian Beer. It is easy to get caught up in the growing American Craft Beer scene right now, but lest we forget there are countries around the world that were making excellent brew way before Columbus Sailed in 1492! Here’s one such brewery, who has been crafting great suds since 1900.
Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck’s “Kasteel Bruin or Donker” is a Belgian Brown Quadrupel Ale. It pours a dark brown color with a thin tan bubbly head that disappears quickly. The aroma is sweet like dried dark fruit, candy sugar and alcohol, with a light nuttiness. The taste is sweet, fruity and slightly sour with dark cherries, burnt caramel, molasses, spices and light hops flavors. The finish is sweet with some heat from the 11% ABV. The mouthfeel is full bodied, smooth and creamy, with moderate carbonation. When I uncorked my bottle there was a date of 12/2008 on the cork. Being that this brew was 2 ½ years old already, I think it would have only gotten better had it had some more years under it’s cork. This is a great brew that I would totally drink again and again. Here’s to Good Beers!

Hey I was wondering where if that bottle of Kasteel Donker is a 25 oz and where in the world you found it? Thanks man!

Johnathan, Yes it was a 1 pint 9oz or 25oz bottle! I see them a few places here in Central NJ. I would check any “Joe Canals” if you are NJ local as there are several in Jersey. Hope you find one! Cheers!
