"Hop Rod"

Lately I have had the pleasure of trying some Bear Republic Brews. Earlier I have posted about “Apex“, and that was good. I have had the “Racer 5” and that was great. This post I am focusing on “Hop Rod” Rye (Imperial / Double IPA). I purchased it in a 1pt 6oz bottle. I have probably said in previous posts that I am a big fan of IPA’s and of Rye beer. This is a combo brew, a double IPA brewed with 18% rye malt; according to Bear Republic’s description. That concept got my imagination going. There was a huge malty, citrus hops smell that filled the room when I poured it. It had an equally huge, thick and creamy head that stuck around until the very end. Upfront it was like an incredibly ripe juicy grapefruit, followed by a delicious malty, hot & spicy rye flavor. The Hop Rod did not just stall out and leave me hanging. There was a sweet bready aftertaste as well. The mouthfeel was medium to full. This was everything my imagination had dreamed it would be. It seemed to me that this was as much an IPA as it was a Rye beer! The Hop Rod tastes so good at an 8% ABV you are going to need to pace yourself. The only thing I can see adding to the experience would be to play some Brian Setzer while enjoying this! This is a great brew for someone looking for something different in a big hoppy IPA. Here’s to Good Beers!

I drank a 12 oz bottle of this last night. Pretty good and complex. It reminded me of a barleywine. In fact, I through one down in my beer cellar. I'm willing to bet that in 5 years or so it tastes a lot like an english old ale.

Now that you mention it. I can see it tasting a bit like a barleywine! I wish I had the self control to hold onto a beer for 5 years!
