Hoppin Frog “B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher” / Beer Float

It is common knowledge that certain edibles in life are enhanced when paired together. There are the most famous matches like, Peanut butter and Chocolate, French Fries and Ketchup, Strawberries and Cream, and so on.  I would like to declare that there is a food pairing that is just as good as the popular ones, Beer + Ice Cream. I know I am not even close to the first person to make this declaration, but there are still many people out there that turn their nose up at the thought of putting ice cream in beer. There are only a few styles of beer that can pull off a “Beer Float” well. For this post I will start with the basics. My wife actually inspired this post. I came home from work one night and she surprised me with a pint of Vanilla Ice Cream from our local Ice Cream shop, and a beer I had not tried yet.
    Hoppin FrogB.O.R.I.S. The CrusherOatmeal-Imperial Stout. According to the 1pt 9oz bottle my wife gifted me with, B.O.R.I.S. stands for “Bodacious Russian Imperial Stout”.  It poured a slick black color with a one finger thick brown head. The aroma was all about coffee and chocolate with wisps of alcohol. There were intense flavors or roasted coffee and dark chocolate. The finish was long with bitter hops and cocoa powder. This is a full bodied brew and a full bodied 9.4% abv that is not shy. This is a 2008 GABF gold medal winner and it is easy to see why. This is a well built stout. The only thing that can enhance this experience is ice cream! I added three generous scoops of vanilla ice cream to “BORIS”. Immediately it transformed into a tan, foamy dessert. The coffee flavor was there still but the bitter dark chocolate flavor was more prevalent with the cold dairy treat added to the mix! This was an amazing beer float.     I had a beer float this week on my vacation to Asheville, NC. It was a scoop of Madagascar vanilla bean ice cream in a pint of Pisgah Nitro Stout. They went together really well.

    Oh, and if you're looking for a good beer podcast, I think the guys on beeramerica.tv do a good job of describing some pretty interesting beers (as do you, of course).
