Lagunitas “Wilco Tango Foxtrot” WTF Ale

I have reviewed a lot of beer on this site over the past year and a half. Not only has this site helped me share my love of better beer, but it has helped me learn a little about myself as far as what I like, don’t like, and want try more of. Likewise I hope that my posts / reviews have done the same for my readers. One thing I noticed after looking back on older posts is that I have reviewed more than a hand full of IPA’s. I loves me some hoppy brews! Which leads me to want to explore the maltier side of beers. I have had malty beers in the not so distant past but really want to understand all the ways this crucial ingredient can be showcased! So I figured I would check out a beer that straight up claims to be malty!
LagunitasWilco Tango FoxtrotAmerican Strong Ale or “WTF” for short is described on the label as “A Malty, Robust, Jobless Recovery Ale. We’re not quite in the Red, or in the Black… Does that mean we’re in the Brown?”. It pours a deep mahogany color with a reddish tinge around the edges. A two finger thick off-white head sits like a sudsy cloud atop this brew. The aromas of citrus hops, sweet malt, caramel, spice, brown sugar and bread surrounded me as soon as I cracked the cap off the bottle. The taste was indeed hoppy upfront, but quickly turned my attention to the piney hops. As my palate warmed the sweet malt, carmely, chocolate flavors took center stage again, and leave the hops just enough in the background to stay balanced. The finish is malty with a bitter hoppiness. The 7.8% ABV seemed to be just right for this beer, big but not over whelming. The mouthfeel is thin but smooth at the same time. This is a beer that makes statements! It says we can ride out this current economic state, and enjoy our fermented malt beverages at the same time! Here’s to Good Beers!
