Pour Some Shugga

Lagunitas Brown Shugga has made me open my mind back up to the world of Barley Wine style beers. I have had a few barley wine beers and none of them were bad or terrible, I just never enjoyed one. That was until I had the “Brown Shugga” on tap. It came to me in a pint glass, but would be more pleasing to the nose if served in a snifter glass. It was a burnt orange color with a tan head about one finger thick. It smelled sweet like molasses. Upon first taste there was some hoppiness to it, but it was quickly followed by the sweetness of sugar. It was a sticky sweet. It had a medium mouth feel and was very smooth. So smooth that one should keep in mind that its ABV is 9.84%. There was not much lacing on the glass. Very sweet with just enough bitter in the end. It took some time for me to wrap my mind around the fact that this was a barley wine. I have since accepted this and will be more open to barley wines in the future. I don’t want to risk missing out on something as good as the “Brown Shugga”, and you shouldn’t either! Here’s to good beers!
