River Horse “Hipp-O-Lantern”

We are not even out of the Summer yet and already Fall beers are starting to hit the shelves! Luckily for me, I am a huge fan of Pumpkin Ale! Yup, despite all the IPA’s I talk about, Pumpkin brews are my absolute favorite! I try and make the most of every Fall and get my fill before they are gone. If you haven’t tried a Pumpkin Ale yet because you have reservations, I strongly recommend them! Even if you don’t like Pumpkin Pie, give it a chance! You might be missing out on some of the tastiest brews out there!
My first Pumpkin beer of the season comes from my home state of NJ. River Horse Brewing Co.’sHipp-O-Lantern” Imperial Pumpkin Ale pours a dark rusty opaque amber, topped off by a creamy khaki colored head. The aroma starts with the appropriate pumpkin spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves; followed by the sweet smells of caramel, vanilla and yeast. The taste has the pumpkin spices upfront like the aroma, then changes over to the sweet flavors of  brown sugar, bread, malt and alcohol. The finish is long and sweet with a decent bit of heat from the 8.1% ABV. The mouthfeel perfectly full and creamy. As Far as Pumpkin Ales go, I personally would have enjoyed a more bold spice presence. I think with some age under its belt this beer will be even better! I will be revisiting this brew again this fall! Get out there and get some Pumpkin Ale! Here’s to Good Beers!
