River Horse’s “Oatmeal Milk Stout”

I don’t know about you but I am tired of winter and we are only a month into it! Luckily there are ways to deal with the cold. When I was a kid I would warm up with some hot cereal in the morning before school. On really cold nights I would have some hot chocolate as a warm treat. As adults we can still enjoy these things, but we have options similar to our childhood treats in the beer arena. For example a hearty Oatmeal Stout, or a creamy. chocolaty Milk Stout. I love stouts, and Oatmeal and Milk Stouts are some of my favorite. One Brewery in New Jersey has combined these two types of stouts and made a pretty special beer.
The River Horse Brewery in Lambertville, NJ, has released their winter seasonal “Oatmeal Milk Stout”. It pours black in color with a big two finger thick beige head. The aroma is inviting with a mix of dark bitter chocolate and sweet chocolate syrup, accompanied by light coffee, rolled oats and roasted malt. The taste is slightly smokey upfront, followed by cocoa powder, fresh coffee beans, and semi-sweet chocolate. The finish has a bitter hop bite with a sweet aftertaste. The mouthfeel is full, smooth and creamy. The 6.7% ABV is faintly noticeable. This is a satisfyingly well balanced stout that is sure to make any harsh winter evening warmer and more bearable! If you are lucky enough to be on the east coast and in the NJ, PA, NY area, look for this brew and enjoy! Here’s to Good Beers!
