Rock Art Brewery’s “Pumpkin Imperial Spruce Stout”

Many times I have stepped up on my soap box and preached my love of Pumpkin Beer! I try my best to let people know that the world of Pumpkin Ale is a vast and very tasty one! Typically I have reviewed the best beers that I found taste the most like Pumpkin Pie! Nothing disappoints me more than a Pumpkin Ale that just doesn’t deliver on the Pumpkin Spice flavor. This time around I checked out a brew that includes Pumpkin but isn’t supposed to taste like Pie, and to even my surprise it works! I love Pumpkin everything, so when I found a brew that used pumpkin but was not a typical Pumpkin Ale, my interest was immediately peaked! So no more build up, on to the brew!
I found a 22oz bottle of Rock Art Brewery’s “Pumpkin Imperial Spruce Stout” for under $5.00 at one of my local brew stores by me. Appropriately on the label it states “What ever you do, do not think this is going to taste like pumpkin pie” It pours a solid black, topped with a creamy brown head that stuck around for a couple minutes. The aroma brought on roasted malt, smoke, chocolate, spruce, hops, and dank basement. The taste personified the aroma plus some, with roasted malt, must, alcohol, dark chocolate, smoke, light nuttiness, and hints of spruce. The finish was long, dry and bitter, with flavors of pumpkin meat, hop resin and spruce. The mouthfeel was medium with moderate carbonation. The 8.0% ABV made this big one to be enjoyed slowly and that is a good thing because this beer opens up and gets better over time as it warms. This is a unique beer, and is supposed to be brewed in a Colonial style. The flavor is interesting and tasty! For under $5.00 this is a great beer at a great value! Here’s to Good Beers!
