Russian River’s “Pliny The Elder”

It is not uncommon for beer enthusiasts to have a “To Drink”, or “Bucket List” of brews that are harder for them to obtain. Here on the East Coast in central New Jersey I had a beer on my “To Drink List”, that I was starting to think was a pipe dream for me! Russian River’s “Pliny the Elder is a beer I have heard nothing but great things about. However, whenever it is on tap in my area, I am never able to get to it in time! You have heard me talk about my recent beer trade with Bianca from AGirlandHerBeer.com (Twitter). This was the one beer I wanted the most, and she (being from California) has easy access to it. I I could not wait to have my own bottle of Pliny! Who is this Pliny Guy? Pliny The Elder is an Ancient Roman “Jack of All Trades”, Google will explain in detail I am sure. On to the Brew!
Russian River’s Double IPA, “Pliny The Elder” pours a beautiful clear gold and has a perfect, billowy white head. The incredible, citrusy aromas of floral and bitter pine hops were even better than I had imagined. Upfront the taste is citrusy and piney, but not overbearing. It is actually light and refreshing. It starts to get a little sweet like a juicy grapefruit towards the middle. The finish is long and fruity with a hint of bitter pine. The mouthfeel is medium and just right. I barely noticed any alcohol for a beer having an ABV of 8%. This is one of the best tasting IPA’s I have had, and it is very easy to drink. For a DIPA this is dare I say, well balanced. Thanks for the Tasty West Coast IPA Bianca, I can cross this one off my list. Here’s to Good Beers!

Glad you liked it! There are rumors of a lesser release coming up, I doubt I’ll be able to get it, but on some off chance, I’ll get two just in case 🙂

      Aaron,
I have never found Pliny on tap in NJ, It is always in NY,NY or Philly, PA. Luckily both are only 1hr from where I reside.

Where’d you get that glass? I like it and would like to have one.

BA-Dude, Actually I got this glass at a local establishment here in NJ. I have aquired a lot of my glassware from Pubs or Craft Beer Bars. I usually let the Bar Tender or Waitress/Waiter that I really like the glass and ask if I can buy it from them. Most of the time they have so many they give it to me free. Never hurts to ask! Cheers!
