Smuttynose “Barleywine Style Ale”

Lately I have been looking for big and bold flavors in my beer. There is just something about Winter time that makes me look for higher abv brews with in your face flavor! It doesn’t necessarily have to be a “dark” beer or a heavy brew. Just something that can warm me up while being incredibly tasty at the same time. I stopped by a seedy local corner store looking to see what they had as far as brews go. As I suspected this was not a store one would typically go when looking for craft beer. However I did find a shelf with a few interesting bottles. One of which I thought would fit my winter beer craving perfectly.
Smuttynose Brewing Co.’sBarleywine Style Ale” is part of their Big Beer Series. It pours a clear copper color with a one finer off-white head. The aroma is is pleasantly hoppy and fruity with hints of caramel, vanilla, and brown sugar. The taste is spicy, citrusy and malty, with big barley, caramel, oak and piny hops flavors. The mouthfeel is full, smooth and creamy. The finish is long, hoppy and a bit hot from the 10% abv. This is a great winter brew that would be best enjoyed on a cold evening with some fruit and cheese perhaps. It is delicious fresh, but i would imagine it would only get better with some age under its cap. I’ll be visiting that seedy corner store again! Here’s to Good Beers!
