Southern Tier’s “Rum Barrel Aged Pumking”

About 4 1/2 years and 200+ beer reviews ago, I reviewed Pumking for the first time. It was my absolute favorite pumpkin ale. It also set me on my perpetual journey to find other equally excellent pumpkin ales. Since 2010 when I started doing reviews, pumpkin ales have exploded and continue to become more popular every year. I even put out my own personal Annual Top 10 Pumpkin Ales List of gourd beers that I was able to get a hold of that year. Last year after I had already put out my top 10 pumpkin ale list I came across…
Southern Tier’sRum Barrel Aged Pumking” pours a clear burnt orange with a foamy white one finger thick head. The aroma is familiar and close to the original Pumking, with pumpkin pie spices and sweet malt. There are additional scents of vanilla, gingerbread and rum. The taste follows the aromas but is lighter on the rum flavor than I expected and that is fine. This is Pumpkin with a delicious and warming kick! Another thing to note is this version is a bit sweeter than the original. The abv is 10.7% but never seems that high. The mouth-feel is medium and slightly slick. The finish is warm and sweet with a nice spiced rum and caramel flavor. For Pumking lovers this is a no-brainer! Here’s to Good Beers!
