Stone “Belgo Anise Imperial Russian Stout”

I have talked about beers in the past that have become ‘Instant Fav’s’ of mine. When is the last time you had one of those brews? It has been a while since I have encountered a beer that has made my “Instant Fav” list, but I came across a great one a couple weeks ago! Actually when I picked up this brew at the store I really did not know what I was in for. The name alone only hinted at the goodness contained in the 22oz bottle I had purchased.
StoneBelgo Anise Imperial Russian Stout” pours black as night with a two finger thick chocolate milk colored fluffy head. The aroma starts off with a dominate black licorice smell from the Anise, and then turns over to sweet and earthy with chocolate malt, roasted coffee beans, caramel, wood, leather, and tobacco. The taste is all anise and hops from the get go, but then evens out with dark bitter chocolate, malt, yeast, coffee, smoke, and spice. The finish is hot and spicy with licorice and heat from the 10.5% ABV.Yes the ABV is high and is always present to some extent but never seems to take away from any of the complex flavors going on here! This is a uniquely tasty brew that I will be keeping on hand in the future! It’s a great twist on the Imperial Russian Stout. Here’s to Good Beers!
