Terrapin “Wake-n-Bake” Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout

There is another beverage that I enjoy just as much as beer! I find Coffee to be just as much an adventure as beer, and sometimes coffee is a down right necessity for me! I like to start my day with a brew and end it with a brew. I’m sure I am not the only one out there that feels this way. Drinking good coffee is on the same level as drinking good beer in my book. When you combine the two, that is a special thing! I have had many beers before that have a coffee flavor to them, but rare is the beer that actually tricks my tongue into thinking I am enjoying a coffee drink and not beer! A Brewery in Athens, Georgia has a beer that literally did combine coffee and beer, and it is magical!
Terrapin’s “Wake-n-Bake” Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout pours a thick, opaque, motor oil black with a one finger thick brown head. The aroma immediately fills the room with robust coffee, dark chocolate, chocolate syrup, earthy tobacco and burnt sugar. The taste delivers some serious fresh coffee flavor. This brew is like drinking an Iced Coffee, with swirls of molasses and chocolaty espresso. It is perfectly roasty and bitter upfront. As it warms up the coffee flavor becomes more mild and finishes sweet with a touch of vanilla in the finish. The mouthfeel is full and chewy. The 8.6% ABV is controlled incredibly well and at times one might even forget there is any alcohol at all! The experience reminded me of my fresh off the French press morning coffee, but iced. The thick and rich mouthfeel was reminiscent of drinking that coffee with a bowl of oatmeal. This brew gives all new meaning to beer for breakfast! This beer is the whole breakfast package. If you ever find yourself in the position where you are looking for a “Kegs and Eggs” beer, this is the perfect breakfast brew! Here’s to Good Beers!
