1 Year Anniversary Review! – The Lost Abbey’s “The Angel’s Share” Barley Wine

Ever had a thinking beer? A beer that just blows your mind? A beer that keeps you on your toes the whole time you are drinking it? These are some of my favorite beers. I really enjoy when I come across a brew that is so complex it constantly and seamlessly changes between my first sip and my last. It is mentally refreshing to drink a beer that makes you do some work to enjoy it. I have had such a beer in my possession for a few months. I received it via trade from Bianca at www.AGirlandHerBeer.com. I saved this one for last and I am extremely glad I did! Bianca definitely hooked me up on this one!
The Lost Abbey’sThe Angel’s ShareBarley Wine aged in Bourbon barrels. It poured a dark opaque brown with absolutely no head. The aroma was amazing with sweet smells of vanilla, oak, dark fruit, chocolate, caramel, and alcohol. The taste was very complex and revealed itself in layers. Initially the flavors are sweet with chocolate, caramel, and raisins. Then mild coffee flavor reveals itself before giving way to the vanilla, oak and bourbon flavors. The finish was delightfully long, smooth, sweet and smokey. This is the definition of a sipping beer. It gets better as it gets warms and the 12.5% ABV doesn’t come off as such. The somewhere between thin and medium mouthfeel was very unique, with very light carbonation. This beer was incredibly flavorful and complex. At times it was like drinking a beer candy bar, and at times it was like drinking a nice smooth bourbon. This is an instant favorite for me! Here’s to Good Beers!
