Weyerbacher’s "Imperial Pumpkin Ale" Re-tooled in ’10?

Here it comes, another Pumpkin Beer Review… Go! My love for pumpkin beer goes back a few years, so I have become somewhat familiar with what ones are available to me locally here in NJ. I have become familiar with how they smell, taste and feel. I have been so bent on finding new pumpkin beers to taste this year that I wasn’t going to bother to try some that I have had multiple times in the past. That was until a friend of mine told me to reconsider trying one in particular. I was informed that this beer was better than ever this year! I immediately thought back about a month ago when I tried this year’s Sam Adams “Octoberfest” and found it to be way better than last years! So of course I picked up some of this possibly improved pumpkin beer to judge for myself.
I have had Weyerbacher’s “Imperial Pumpkin Ale” many times over the past few years. I always thought that it was a decent pumpkin beer, but I have to admit that this year it seems like a totally different beer to me! It poured a cloudy, deep orangey-amber, topped with a big foamy off-white creamy head that sticks around for a while. The aroma is very pleasant with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, malt and vanilla. I was quickly reminded of pumpkin pie, which is exactly what I am looking for from a pumpkin beer! The taste was sweet upfront followed by pumpkin pie spices, but predominantly nutmeg and allspice. It mellowed out in the middle with a light buiscuty flavor, and finished clean with a bitter hint of hops. There is almost no sign that this has a higher ABV, especially not anywhere near 8%! It had a very nice medium mouthfeel. I wish I had held on to some bottles from the last 3 years, because this years release does not remind me at all of last year’s release. I think this beer has been re-tooled by Weyerbacher. I remember it being spicy and a little overly astringent. It was a good beer before but I think they hit all the right marks this year! This is an excellent pumpkin beer! Congratulations Weyerbacher on improving this beer exponentially! Here’s to Good Beers!

Nice use of the Sam Adams glass. That's one of our favorites to drink out of. So many of our glasses are boxed up because of our temporary living situation and such a pain to pack all those glasses!

@Aaron, I love the Sam Adams Glass! I have (As do most beer people I am sure) a slight obsession with beer glassware! It is just beautiful!
